Heaven Solomon, a Wolastoqey language educator from Neqotkuk, is part of a growing movement to revitalize the Wolastoqey language amid alarming declines in fluent speakers. Featured in this CBC article, she highlights the urgency of language reclamation, particularly in light of recent census data showing a drop in Indigenous language speakers. Through education, community programs, and her own lived experience, Solomon is helping lead efforts to restore the language as a vital part of cultural identity and everyday life.

Heaven Solomon

Heaven Solomon is a Wolastoqey language educator and the Cultural and Language Coordinator for Tobique Education. She holds a Bachelor of Education and is currently pursuing her Master of Education in Administration and Leadership at the University of New Brunswick. She is also a graduate of the Maliseet Language Immersion Program delivered through St. Thomas University in Neqotkuk. In 2022, Heaven was crowned Miss New Brunswick and used her platform to promote the importance of Wolastoqey language and culture. She continues to support community-based language efforts and helped shape the vision for Neqotkuk’s future language home.
