Since 2018, Tobique First Nation has been hosting the Maliseet Language Program, a two-year linguistic and cultural initiative designed for non-speakers.
The Maliseet Language Program is designed to teach participants how to speak and understand the language, even if they start with no prior knowledge. Over the two-year program, each cohort learns through immersive language instruction, cultural teachings, and hands-on activities that strengthen their connection to the Wolastoqey language and traditions. The goal is to support language reclamation and fluency among non-speakers while deepening their cultural understanding.
This immersive program has successfully graduated two cohorts and is currently in its first year with the third cohort. The next intake for the program will begin in January 2026.
